“When am I ever going to use this?”  Math teachers hear it all the time, so Christian Jones, Advanced Functions and Modeling teacher, and Christine Betts, A.P Statistics teacher, invited Ed Suffern, a senior engineer at IBM, to make a presentation to their classes showing how mathematics is used in the real world. 

Along with other examples, Suffern showed how math is used to model weather and predict the occurrence of tornadoes.  He then explained how engineers calculate stress on an airplane wing to decide the best material choice for the wings. 

 “We think the students really enjoyed his presentation and learned how math really does affect real-world situations,” says Jones.  Hopefully, Suffern’s examples helped answer the question, “When am I ever going to use this.” 

The Lady Falcons of Track and Field won the PAC-6 Regular Season with an undefeated record of 7-0 and they continued their winning ways at the PAC-6 Conference Meet.  The legacy continues with back-to-back victories under the leadership of Coach Winter Bingham Simpson and John Gray, PAC-6 Coaches of the Year.  Leading the Lady Falcons were Juniors Zakiya Tyson (Track) and Tristine Johnson (Field), both of whom were named PAC-6 MVP athletes of the conference.  Tyson won first place in the 100M and 200M and anchored the winning 4 X 100M and 4 X 200M Relays.  Johnson had an enormous day, winning four individual events in the 100H, 300M Hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump.  Senior Shantia Parker placed first in the Shot Put and second in the Discus while Captain Nettie McMiller, also a senior, placed fourth in high jump, second in long jump, third in triple jump, and was a member of the 4 X 100 Relay team. Patrice Goldmon placed fourth in the 100M and is a member of the sprint relays.  Kelly Page is the queen of pole vault for the Falcon team and placed third in the conference.  The team also has three dynamic freshmen that contributed greatly to the team's winning season.  Santese Pryor placed second in the 100M and third in the 200M and was a member on the sprint relays.  Alexis Perry placed second in the 100 Hurdles and fourth in the high jump and long jump.  Samantha Ray placed second in the 800M Run and 1600M Run.

The team also placed first at the 4A Mideast Regionals at Panther Creek.  Tyson placed second in the 100M and first in the 200M Dash. Johnson won the triple jump and qualified in the 100 M and 300 M Hurdles.  Parker placed third in the Shot Put while Perry placed third in Long Jump and was a contributing member of the first placed 4 X 100 relay team. Pryor qualified for the 100M and 200M. Ray in Distance and Captain McMiller in Jumps both contributed points to the overall win.  The sprint relays which consisted of Perry, Pryor, Goldmon, Tyson, and Johnson broke two Jordan school records with a time of 48.12 in the 4 X 100 and 1:42 in the 4 X 200M Relay.  Please come out and support the Lady Falcons as they compete in the 4A State Championship on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at NC A&T University.
