After a successful trip to Italy this summer, Jordan Art & Photography teacher Paula Siwek plans to make travel an annual opportunity for Jordan students. The twelve-day tour included Rome, Florence, Venice, Asissi, Spoleto, Pompei, Capri and finally flying back from Rome. The students in the group included David Idol, Chelsea Perfect, Ian MacRonald, Kevin Kershaw, Aglaya Batchvarova, Rheaya Willis, Grace Taylor, and Holly Broderick. "We got along and functioned well as travelers,” said Ms. Siwek. "This trip was also a huge cultural success. From standing under the Sistine Chapel to viewing Galileo's tomb in Santa Croce, to eating gelato numerous times per day, every day was very exciting." David Idol, after seeing the rocky coast of Capri, said “I never knew places like this existed.”
"As a visual artist and teacher, I think that traveling breaks down language, cultural and geographic barriers. The students were instinctively aware that it was up to them to assimilate to the Italian culture and not the other way around." According to a recent geography survey conducted by National Geographic, young Americans (16- to 24-year-olds) who traveled outside the U.S. in the past three years performed 40% better on the survey than those who did not. "I am so glad I was able to help my students to know more about their world — the culture, the people, the languages of other countries.”
Ms. Siwek plans to take students to discover the magic of Greece in 2009!

Four Falcon’s Cry staff members won a total of seven awards in the North Carolina Press Club High School Communications Competition May 17. Senior Lindsey Rupp received a third place award in the editorial category and an honorable mention in news. Junior Matthew Chase won second place in design and third place in opinion writing, and sophomore Jackie Randell won first place in opinion writing. Senior Jenny Gundersdorff received a first place award in feature photography (pictured below) and a second place award in sports photography. The first place entries go on the National Association of Press Women national competition.
Rupp, who is editor-in-chief of the paper, said that she was very proud to have two first place winners, but she was surprised there were not more. She said that the eight-person staff is committed to making every story and photograph first place quality, which gives her high hopes for upcoming national competitions.
“It doesn’t matter what size your staff is if you’re willing to work hard and you’re really dedicated,” Rupp said. “I can’t even explain how incredible [the staffers] are. . . They’re willing to go the extra step to make it not just a piece that informs people, but a piece that people want to read.” |
