Pride. Family. Immigration. Dreams. Through music, six Jordan students explored these themes with Quetzal, a professional Chicano band from Los Angeles. Quetzal worked with and performed for 30 Durham high school students on Oct. 19 at Duke University. The group included the following Jordan students: Juan Carlos Canuto, Reina Espana, Jennifer Lizama, Salma Martinez, Evelyn Meza and Angel Torres. After small group discussions led by the band members, students created musical pieces which explored personal issues. Students were also invited to attend the band's Friday night performance at Duke's Page Auditorium. |

On Saturday, Oct.14th, 13 students from Ms. Risley’s Agriscience class spent the day volunteering at Carnivore Preservation Trust. Carnivore Preservation Trust (CPT) is a wildlife sanctuary in Pittsboro that is home to Tigers, Leopards, Caracals, Servals, Ocelots, Binturongs, and Kinkajous.
Students started the day by cleaning up around the brand new quarantine facility that is being built so CPT can take in more animals. After lunch students were given an educational tour of the compound by Ms. Risley. Ms. Risley has volunteered at CPT for 6 years and shared stories about each individual animal. The animals were pleased to see us, especially since we came armed with toys.
Earlier in the week, each student had created a paper mache ball. They filled each paper mache ball with straw, a piece of beef, and a selected scent. These toys are referred to as enrichment balls. Some of the animals played with the toys by batting them around while others, such as Jelly Bean, the white tiger, tore into them immediately. A few cats were simply happy to visit with us and waited to play with their toys after we’d left.
For more information on CPT please visit http://www.cptigers.org/ or stop by and speak to Ms. Risley in room 004.
